Why is Hypnotherapy still Controversial?

Does Hypnosis work? The short answer is NO. Or, let us put it in this way: It is controversial. It does not always work.

Hypnosis is not what is on the TV show, where hypnotised people consider themselves as a chicken ending up clucking. It is not falling asleep either. It is basically, to put it simply, deep concentration.

What is Hypnotherapy? Hypnotherapy is a heightened state of concentration and focused attention. Guided by a hypnotherapist, hypnosis allows you to be more open to suggestions to making healthful changes in your perceptions, sensations, emotions, memories, thoughts or behaviours.

Hypnosis got a bad name in the 1990s when some therapists convinced patients they had been molested or abused as children because of hypnotically induced memories, which often had no evidence to support them. As a result, many innocent people were wrongly accused of abuse in hundreds of court cases.

"People didn’t really understand the suggestibility of memory," Michael Yapko, PhD, a psychologist and fellow of the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis, says. "That whole issue has pretty much fallen by the wayside now" because of advances in research.

Its use in therapy, typically to recover suppressed memories or to allow modification of behaviour, has been revived but is still controversial.

However, Hypnotherapy does not always work. It works for somebody, and it doesn’t work for others. It may or may not work. NHS warned “Do not use hypnotherapy if you have psychosis or certain types of personality disorder, as it could make your condition worse”.

Overcome does not practise Hypnotherapy, although we do have accredited trainers and therapists who are expert in Hypnotherapy. However, we believe our methodology is sufficient to solve problems, and we do not add extras which just adding up your costs but not adding up much effect, which means the cost-effect ratio is not good enough for us to take it on. Especially, considering that it has risks, being controversial and the failure rate is not low, plus it does not cover as much as mental problems in real society, we would not waste the precious time of our clients to undergo it.

We do acknowledge that Hypnotherapy works for some problems of some people, though, for example quit smoking. We consider it has some benefits for you to try and experience, however as Overcome, we pursue the best solution for our clients and we are responsible for an optimised solution, not a perfect solution, and this solution needs to be efficient too. We do not prolong the suffering of our clients by adding irrelevant treatment. For us, less is more.

As we have said, Neuro-linguistic Programming and Rational Emotive Behavioural Therapy are the only two science-based therapies, which is proven to work and tested over decades. Taking NLP and REBT as foundation, Overcome’s methodology STRATECHIEVE has 98% of success rate.

We keep our blog posts extremely short in bite size by axing irrelevant elaborations. If some concepts interests you, or you believe they can help you, we believe you can explore deeper and more extensive on your own initiative.
